Carrie's Walk For Awareness Page

OVER 1 MILLION WOMEN IN AMERICA HAVE UNDETECTED BREAST CANCER...TODAY!

That is why I have committed to raising more than $1900 and to walk 60 miles on the weekend of October 5, 6, and 7 of 2001.

"Awareness" is my battle cry.

I became more aware of breast cancer this spring when I was informed that my cousin Mary, who is younger than me, had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Living so far away has made it difficult for me to support her and her family. I heard about the Avon Breast Cancer 3-day and knew even if the money raised wouldn't help her directly, at least is was a way to show my support.

On the weekend of October 5, 2001, I will join with more than 2000 other courageous men and women as we walk 60 miles from Lake Lanier(north of Atlanta) to downtown Atlanta in the Avon Breast Cancer 3-day Walk. Each day, our feet will cover 20 miles, while each night we will sleep in a tent city along the route, all in an effort to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness. The Avon Products Foundations, Inc., a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, distributes the net proceeds from this event to support non-profit health programs in every region of the country, and cutting edge medical research on women's diseases at leading academic institutions.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for all women, and the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. Both its causes and the means for its cure remain undiscovered. Currently, one million women in the United States have the disease, but they don't konw it. They will probably not find out about their potentially fatal illness for another five to eight years. It is for this reason, and for all the moms, aunts, grandmothers, sisters, cousins, and friends of everyone that I have decided to walk. I am walking to do something big - something that would challenge me as much as breast cancer challenges so many women. I have set a goal to raise $2500 or more for this event. I hope that I can count on you to be a partner with me in this event. Your pledge shows me that you are walking with me in spirit.

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity. With best regards, and enormous gratitude,

Carrie
